WESTSIDE HOMELESS PREVENTION RELEASES PROGRAM EFFICACY STUDY
Study indicates $20 of long term value created for each $1 in program investment
Westside Homeless Prevention generates an estimated $20 in benefits for each $1 in program investment, according to a study of the agency’s outcomes conducted by Greenhouse Social Ventures.
The study found that WHP’s program reduces the dropout risk of children in client families by keeping them in stable housing, going to school and on track for promotion to the next grade. That reduction in dropout risk translates not only into higher career earnings for students ($8 of the $20 of value created), but also into lower societal costs such as safety net programs and incarceration costs ($12 of the $20 of value created).
“What we learned by studying WHP is that three factors – selectivity, program duration and program intensity – explain the unusually high success rate,” said Bob King, President of Greenhouse Social Ventures, the Houston-based nonprofit consulting firm that compiled the study. “That high program success rate is wisely aimed at a huge value-creator: keeping the children of affected families moving forward towards graduation. WHP is a homelessness prevention program, yes. But it also doubles as a fantastic dropout prevention program, and that’s where there is tremendous long term value.”
The study separately looked at the increase in client family earnings from the beginning to the end of the program, and calculated that it took less than nine months to generate benefits equal to program costs.
“We are gratified – but not surprised – by the results of this study,” said Susan Bolling, Executive Director of WHP. “Our staff and volunteers have always known the power of the program, but in human terms. The Greenhouse study provides social investors with a financial tool to compare WHP’s effectiveness to other alternative investments, and we feel justifiably proud that our program measures up so well using these metrics.”
